Adult Sailing Course Information

Welcome to the Alfred’s Australian Sailing (AS) Keelboat Program

RPAYC offers a simple training pathway for adults wanting to get into sailing or for those seasoned sailors to develop their skills. Training is delivered by Australian Sailing (AS) accredited instructors following a national syllabus.

RPAYC provides a pathway from the beginner stages right through to race coaching. If you want to discover sailing, we will provide a safe, fun, and affordable environment to build your skills.

The program is broken into 5 modules, some modules combine to constitute a level, other modules are a level in of themselves. The progression through the keelboat program can be seen below:

THURSDAY DISCOVER SAILING SESSION (WEEKLY EVENTS)

22 October – 17 December

Times: 17:00 for 2.5hrs

  • Enjoy Twilight sailing onboard a Club Elliott 7 yacht with an instructor.
  • Great way to experience sailing and club life and meet new friends.
  • Participants will learn the ropes and then join the Thursday Twilight race.

What Class Should I Enrol In?

Discover Sailing Session | Introduction to Sailing

This is your first step in learning to sail. It is the perfect introduction to the basics of sailing and an introduction to Discovering sailing on Pittwater and Club life at the RPAYC. 
Each session corresponds with the Thursday Twilight Series race. A qualifies AS instructor will be on board and take you through the basic’s of sailing before participanting in a casual fun manner in the race. Post race you are invite to enjoy the Clubs hospitality and social fun back at the Clubhouse.
You can takepart in as many Discover Sailing Sessions as you feel. 

There is no experience necessary and no assumed knowledge, just come along to have fun and we’ll take care of the rest. Bring your friends or family for a great time out on Pittwater.

Level 1 | Start Crewing

Start Crewing is the first component of the Australian Sailing Keelboat training course. It is the perfect introduction to the basics of sailing. You’ll get familiar with the boat and the key responsibilities of being a crew member. You’ll get the confidence to control the sails and a basic understanding of the effects of most controls. 

Lifejackets are provided, all of our instructors are fully qualified, and Pittwater is one of the best locations to learn on the East Coast. There is no experience necessary and no assumed knowledge, just come along to have fun and we’ll take care of the rest.

Level 2 | Start Skippering

The Start Skippering course focuses on the decision making process for a person in charge of a sailing boat. Not only does it further develop the motor skills of sailing, but exercises the thought process behind making decisions as the person in charge of the boat.

It is the third component of the Australian Sailing Keelboat training course. You’ll see the effect of certain decisions on a boat’s performance and you’ll gain a further understanding of how to work with your crew to manipulate the boat to get it to do what you want it to do.

Level 3 | Start Racing

Now you have successfully progressed through to the final stage of the syllabus, it’s time to take your sailing to a new level – it’s time to start racing. That’s right, competing against your mates to see who can get around the course the fastest.

The Start Racing is the 5th and final component in the Australian Sailing Keelboat training course.The beauty of this course, like it’s “Spinnakers Course” counterpart, is its flexibility to teach the racing tactics at both an elementary level to those new to the concept or to hone the skills of the seasoned yachtsman. This course takes a holistic focus to racing, considering all components of required teamwork from all crew and skipper to successfully get around the course faster than your competitors.
